Current State of Social Media

Social Media Marketing on November 12th, 2009 View Comments

Social Media is everywhere.

The size of the network space that the major heavy weights in the Social Media Game currently occupy is easily in the hundreds of millions! The three most popular networks are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn (in that order). The common assumption here is that the vast majority of the people using these networks are young, and that simply isn’t the case today. In a recent report compiled by Marketing Prof’s it was found that the industries most likely to employ social media marketing were:

social-media-marketing

  • arts & entertainment
  • online retail
  • travel
  • leisure
  • hospitality
  • media publishing and broadcasting

According to Marketing Profs’, Facebook is the network of choice among marketers for personal connections and LinkedIn is the most popular place for professional profiles. As I mentioned above these networks account for usage numbers in the hundreds of millions. The Facebook network is well over 300 million users and still growing.

Facebook website interaction rates are astounding:
  • 50% of their active users log into Facebook every day
  • The fastest growing demographic is those 35 years and older
  • Average user has 130 friends on the site
  • More than 8 billion minutes are spent are spent on Facebook each day, worldwide
  • More than 45 million status updates each day
  • More than 10 million users become fans of pages each day
  • Average visit length for a Facebook user is about 20 minutes!

Great, exciting stats……so what do I do with that?

I hear this from clients on a regular basis, and again the quick answer here is “whatever your customers are asking for.” The objective of all this activity to better connect with your consumer base and make your business more available to them in the mediums that they want. Facebook, Twitter, or even LinkedIn may not be the answer for you, but if you’re not at least exploring these you may be missing out on connections and conversations with current customers and even more importantly NEW customers.

So what is the right mix and balance of Social Media?

The quick answer to this question is “it depends on you, your business, and most importantly your customers.” The way FirstTracks Marketing Group approaches this with our clients is to take stock of where their client’s customer base exists and then create a better mix of tools and platforms to make them more readily available to their target audience. The whole idea of social media marketing is to actively participate with your customers in an ongoing dialog that will connect your product and or service with them. Social media marketing sites are just one way to do this.
